Barrel twist. I know a someone explained this to me but I forgot.
Okay, so I remember someone telling me that a slower barrel twist meant I could stabilize a heavier bullet. If I have a .22-250 barrel, at a twist of 1 in 12. Can I push 60+ grain bullets through this thing? Or will I have to stick at 55 gr and below? From what I've seen out there the quicker barrel twists on ARs are the ones that can stabilize the heavier bullets.

For 22-250, 1:12-1:14" twist generally stabilzes .224 bullets in the 40gr to ~60gr range. For .223, 1:12 twist for 45-60gr, 1:9 twist for 50gr to ~70gr, 1:7" to 1:8" twist stabilizes 55gr to 80gr--and even 100gr loads (being developed). |

Hey Silver City,
Where can I find out about 1 in 10 Savage 308. It there a chart somewhere? Just trying to cut some time out of the trial and error method. E-A |

My choice for optimum accuracy in a 1:10 barrel? Try Federal 168 or 175 Match...or handloads with the same Sierra bullets and IMR3031 or IMR4895 powder. |

Thanks fellas, I got it in my head somehow that spinning a heavy bullet really fast like 1:8" would just have the jacket fly off and things like that.

And don't forget the speed factor. Heavy and slow can stabilize in a fast and light twist barrel....for the casters out there....

Seriously, if you don't shoot bullets so lightly constructed that they will expand in a prairie dog, it isn't an issue. |
